Akansoy Calls for Pre-5+1 Consultations with Political Parties
Republican Turkish Party (CTP) General Secretary Asım Akansoy has called on President Ersin Tatar to engage with political parties ahead of the 5+1 meeting scheduled for March.
Speaking on Kanal T, Akansoy emphasized the importance of holding a series of consultations before the meeting, noting that such discussions are critical for demonstrating political will.
“Significant Differences Between the Two Sides”
Commenting on the ongoing discussions regarding the opening of new crossing points, Akansoy stated:
“Consultations have taken place regarding the opening of two crossing points. Residents from certain areas in South Cyprus have expressed their desire for new crossing points. The Turkish side has proposed the opening of Haspolat to alleviate congestion at Metehan, which currently handles 65% of total crossings. The Greek Cypriot side, on the other hand, favors opening Kiraçıköy.”
Akansoy explained that the issue was raised during the October 2024 meeting in New York, where the UN Secretary-General instructed both sides to work on new crossing points. This led to increased activity around the matter.
Highlighting the need for concrete steps on the Cyprus issue, Akansoy stated, “Both sides are currently positioning themselves ahead of the March meeting. President Tatar and President Christodoulides are focused on maintaining their stances in the eyes of the UN Secretary-General. However, there are significant political differences between the two sides.”
“Comprehensive Solution Requires Political Will”
Akansoy reiterated that a comprehensive solution is achievable within the UN framework, emphasizing principles of political equality and justice. He referenced past agreements from 2006 to 2017 as foundations for progress, urging steps toward result-oriented political will.
He stressed that the Cyprus issue cannot afford further delays, given regional developments, and added:
“As Turkish Cypriots, we must remain at the table within the UN framework, adopting a collective approach and avoiding maximalist stances. Any deviation from UN Security Council resolutions towards separatist positions would harm Turkish Cypriots.”
“5+1 Meeting Holds Strategic Importance”
Akansoy highlighted the importance of the upcoming 5+1 meeting:
“The decisions to emerge from this meeting remain uncertain. Discussions at this stage are informal, with official negotiations to follow once agreements are reached on key issues. The March meeting will address fundamental positions, red lines, and differences between the sides, with the participation of guarantor states.”
Calling on President Tatar, Akansoy urged:
“Mr. Tatar will represent Turkish Cypriots at the meeting. However, the involvement of Parliament, preparatory work, and shared wisdom are crucial for the legitimacy of representation. It is necessary to hold consultations with political parties to identify risks, opportunities, and potential actions. A series of meetings should take place before March. Additionally, it should be clarified whether Mr. Tatar will attend the meeting alone or with a delegation.”
