Minister Dinçyürek: Investigation into Infant Death Continues, Those Responsible Will Be Held Accountable
Health Minister Hakan Dinçyürek addressed the ongoing investigation into the tragic incident at Nicosia Dr. Burhan Nalbantoğlu State Hospital, where newborns were mistakenly given pure alcohol instead of water. One infant lost their life, while six others were intubated.
Speaking on Kıbrıs Postası TV program, Dinçyürek emphasized that both judicial and administrative investigations are underway, and those responsible will be held accountable.
The minister confirmed that the Police General Directorate is conducting a criminal investigation, while the Ministry of Health has launched an internal inquiry. Statements are being taken from all involved parties, and the process is being carried out with full transparency to ensure justice. He also noted that a preliminary autopsy was conducted on the deceased infant, but a final report is pending from Turkey’s Forensic Medicine Institute, which may take between three months to a year.
Dinçyürek described the intense pressure faced by healthcare workers following the incident. At the time, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit was treating 10 to 11 critically ill infants, and the sudden tragedy led to emotional outbursts from the affected families. He stated that some healthcare workers received threats and faced a chaotic environment, yet they continued their efforts to keep the remaining infants alive. Despite these challenges, he expressed deep appreciation for their dedication, acknowledging that their hard work was instrumental in saving lives.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to uncovering the truth, Dinçyürek stated that no one will be exempt from accountability. He stressed that the investigation will leave no room for doubt, and appropriate legal action will be taken against those found responsible.
