Tatar: Cyprus' Future Will Be Determined by the Will of the Turkish Cypriot People

In an interview with Kıbrıs Gazetesi, President Ersin Tatar emphasized that the future of Cyprus cannot be shaped independently of the will of the Turkish Cypriot people. He stated that the upcoming Geneva meeting in March will focus on presenting the realities on the ground and advocating for Cyprus’ future to be discussed with the Greek Cypriot side as an equal actor.

Tatar explained that the current approach is based on the principle of sovereign equality and equal international status, and any new negotiations will not begin until these principles are recognized. He reiterated that the federal solution model has been exhausted, referencing the 2017 Crans-Montana talks, where the federal solution was effectively rejected after the Greek Cypriot leader’s withdrawal from negotiations.
“The federal solution issue was completely exhausted in 2017, and insisting on revisiting it would strengthen the Greek Cypriot side and serve to maintain the status quo,” Tatar said. He emphasized that the Turkish side, with full support from Turkey, has been advocating for sovereign equality and equal international status for the past four years, and this stance is gaining increasing international recognition.
Highlighting the geopolitical shifts in the region, Tatar stated that Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean are no longer as they once were, and these changes are influencing their policy approach. He also pointed out that United Nations (UN) resolutions on Cyprus are non-binding and merely advisory, stressing that the Turkish Cypriot side remains firm in its policy of sovereign equality and will not back down from this stance.
Tatar concluded by saying that the Turkish Cypriot side’s position in the upcoming Geneva meeting is clear: no new negotiations will take place unless the Turkish Cypriot people's will is acknowledged and respected. He further noted that international understanding and acceptance of this new policy are growing, citing the recent support from Pakistan's Prime Minister for the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) as an example.
