Christodoulides to Request Information from the UN Secretariat on DiCarlo’s Meetings

The Greek-Cypriot press reported that Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides plans to contact the UN Secretariat to request information regarding the meetings held by UN Under-Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo. Christodoulides is expected to request information within the next 24 hours, specifically concerning DiCarlo’s engagements.

According to Fileleftheros newspaper, based on its sources, Christodoulides is prepared to reach out to the UN Secretariat if he does not receive any phone calls from New York before his return from Cairo.
The report also noted that DiCarlo, who met with President Christodoulides last Monday, had mentioned she would discuss the Cyprus issue with him following her visits to Athens and Ankara. The Greek-Cypriot side, however, is primarily concerned with understanding where the Cyprus issue stands after DiCarlo’s meetings in Ankara.
The newspaper mentioned that among the matters expected to be clarified during DiCarlo’s Ankara discussions is the scheduling of the informal meeting in Geneva. It also noted that the United Nations intended to announce the informal talks themselves.
The newspaper further speculated that it was unlikely that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres would issue a message to all stakeholders regarding the informal meeting at this stage, as he might want to first review DiCarlo’s report before making any statements.
Fileleftheros also highlighted the UN’s significant investment in improving relations between Greece and Turkey, viewing it as a potential contributor to resolving the Cyprus issue. This view was conveyed both during DiCarlo’s visit to the island and through the Greek-Cypriot negotiator Menelaos Menelau’s contacts in New York.
Parallel to this, DiCarlo has expressed concerns over the continuation of positive relations between Greece and Turkey, noting that Turkey, unlike in the previous period, has shown a more negative approach towards Greece following regime changes in Syria. This shift in relations has been noted by both the Greek-Cypriot side and the UN.
The newspaper reiterated that Christodoulides’ intention is to speak with either UN Secretary-General Guterres or DiCarlo this week regarding the current state of affairs. Communication with New York is considered crucial by the Greek-Cypriot side in preparing for the upcoming Geneva talks.
