Toros: "Political and Economic Gains Must Be the Focus of a Solution"

Speaking at the yesterday's parliament quorum, Republican Turkish Party (CTP) MP Fikri Toros delivered a speech titled "Political and Economic Gains at the Core of a Solution," emphasizing the approaching critical meeting on the Cyprus peace process.

Toros argued that a comprehensive solution based on a federal structure ensuring the political equality of both communities would also contribute to resolving disputes between Turkey and Greece.
He expressed hope that, instead of reiterating well-known political positions, the informal meeting in March would focus on common future interests. Only by doing so, he said, could Cyprus move toward security, peace, and stability.
"If we wait for another factor or a different time, change will never come," Toros stated, stressing that reconciliation is primarily the responsibility of the Cypriots. He urged leaders not to succumb to their political ideologies and avoid their responsibilities. "You must not let your failures define you. You must not let them prevent you from learning," he added.
"Federal Solution Will Bring True Democracy to Cyprus"
Highlighting the importance of democracy, Toros stated that upholding and maintaining democracy is a fundamental duty of every Cypriot. He asserted that a federal solution would bring genuine democracy to Cyprus and prevent Greek Cypriots from being the sole representatives of the island in the international arena.
Citing data from the Oslo-based Peace Research Institute (PRIO), Toros outlined the economic benefits of a solution, such as an increase in GDP, economic growth, sectoral development, and access to new markets. He also emphasized the potential economic expansion that could follow the resolution of property disputes.
Toros reiterated CTP’s position that political equality should not be a matter of negotiation and that the focus should be on the benefits of a comprehensive solution. He also noted that Turkey, too, stands to gain from a resolution. "A solution will not only benefit the Cypriot communities but will also bring peace and prosperity to the entire region," he said.
Urging attention to the voices of hundreds of thousands demanding change, Toros underlined that the success of a solution depends on how well-prepared all parties are.
