Gender-Based Violence Persists Across All Regions: 1,024 Complaints in 2024, 79 in January 2025

On the occasion of International Women's Day, data obtained by Kıbrıs Postası reveals that 1,024 complaints were recorded in 2024, while 79 complaints were filed with the police in the first month of 2025.

The reality of violence against women in Northern Cyprus comes to the forefront once again on this significant day. Statistics shared with Kıbrıs Postası by the Police General Directorate’s Department for Combating Violence Against Women highlight the extent of violence women face.
Over 1,000 Complaints in a Year
According to data from the Department for Combating Violence Against Women, between January 1 and December 31, 2024, a total of 1,024 complaints were recorded across Northern Cyprus. The majority of these complaints involved physical and psychological violence, while incidents of sexual assault and harassment were also reported at concerning levels. In January 2025 alone, 79 complaints were filed, providing stark evidence that violence against women continues unabated.
Physical Assault Most Reported Crime
The most frequently reported crime against women was physical assault, with 465 recorded cases. The highest number of complaints came from Kyrenia (134), Famagusta (126), and Nicosia (119).
Assault Followed by Disturbing Calls and Fights
Other commonly reported offenses in 2024 included 72 complaints of physical altercations and 73 cases of disturbing calls or messages. The data once again confirms that physical and psychological abuse are among the most prevalent forms of violence against women. Additionally, there were 41 complaints of bodily harm, 30 cases of sexual assault, and 18 incidents of sexual harassment, indicating the severity of gender-based violence.
Violence Reported in All Regions
While Nicosia, Famagusta, and Kyrenia recorded the highest number of complaints, cases of violence against women were also reported in Güzelyurt and İskele. Although the majority of complaints were concentrated in urban centers, this does not imply that gender-based violence is absent in rural areas. Many women are believed to refrain from filing complaints for various reasons, suggesting that the actual figures are significantly higher than those reported.
79 Complaints in the First Month of 2025
The new year has shown no signs of improvement, with 79 complaints filed in January alone—an alarming indicator of a worsening trend throughout 2025. The most frequently reported crimes in January included 10 cases of physical altercations, 17 instances of disturbing calls, and 7 cases of bodily harm. Meanwhile, sexual assault and harassment cases totaled 8 complaints.
As gender-based violence persists across all regions, the data underscores the urgent need for continued action and stronger protective measures for women in Northern Cyprus.
