KSTU Investigation: Kemal Dürüst to Be Tried Without Detention

In the ongoing "fake diploma and corruption" investigation at Cyprus Health and Social Sciences University (KSTU), the Vice President of the Board of Trustees, Kemal Dürüst, has been released to stand trial without detention, with a 100,000 TL bail set. Dürüst, a former minister from the National Unity Party (UBP), was brought before the court in Morphou in connection with the investigation.

According to Serap Şahin, a reporter for Yenidüzen newspaper, Gültekin Sancar from the Anti-Financial Crime Department presented in court that Dürüst was a suspect in "forgery of official documents" and "incitement to forge documents." Police claim that in 2023, Dürüst instructed the then-Morphou Police Chief, Barış Sel, to create fake diplomas and transcripts for the Business Administration Master's Program. Furthermore, he allegedly ordered the preparation of another set of fake documents for a different individual, but those documents were not accepted by the person in question. Dürüst stated in his testimony that he delivered the document, but was unaware of its content.
The court, noting that the investigation is still ongoing, decided that Dürüst would be tried without detention, with the condition of a travel ban, a 100,000 TL cash bond, and two guarantors who will sign a bail bond of 1 million TL each.
What Happened?
As part of the corruption investigation at KSTU, Kemal Dürüst is facing charges of "forgery of documents, circulating forged documents, incitement to forge documents, and money laundering." The investigation includes statements from Serdal Gündüz, a small partner of the university, who turned himself in to the police in January. In his testimony, Gündüz claimed that Dürüst and Barış Sel had frequent meetings, and when Sel said, "I urgently need a diploma," Dürüst allegedly responded, "Let’s graduate him and give him the diploma. He is the police chief."
