Hasipoğlu’s Expectations for Geneva: Bi-Communal Cooperation

Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu has emphasized that instead of federation-based negotiations, an approach centered on cooperation between the two communities would be more realistic in addressing the Cyprus issue.

The Secretary-General of the National Unity Party (UBP), Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu, stated that the informal meeting to be held in Geneva on March 17-18 could lay the groundwork for cooperative efforts between the Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot communities.
Speaking on BRT, Hasipoğlu reiterated that prioritizing intercommunal cooperation rather than federation-based negotiations would be a more pragmatic approach.
“Our expectation from the Geneva meeting is to pave the way for joint initiatives between the Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot communities,” Hasipoğlu said.
Addressing the ongoing Cyprus negotiation processes, Hasipoğlu noted that establishing sustainable cooperation mechanisms between the parties would help the Turkish Cypriot community progress in economic and social fields despite international isolation.
Commenting on the United Nations-led meeting, Hasipoğlu stated that the Turkish Cypriot side advocates a cooperation-based approach.
Pointing out that there is no clear timetable for whether the informal meeting will evolve into an official negotiation process, Hasipoğlu reaffirmed the Turkish Cypriot side’s position in favor of a two-state solution.
Further developments regarding the Geneva meeting are expected to become clearer in the coming days.
