Exams Canceled at Bekirpaşa High School: “Attack on Secular Constitution”

Following the cancellation of exams at Bekirpaşa High School after a student attempted to take the test wearing a headscarf, Cyprus Turkish Secondary Education Teachers’ Union (KTOEÖS) President Selma Eylem criticized the move, stating, "The amendment to the Disciplinary Regulation is being legitimized. This is an attack on the secular constitution."

Speaking to Kıbrıs Postası about recent incidents at İrsen Küçük Secondary School and Bekirpaşa High School, Eylem said the changes to the Disciplinary Regulation, which allowed bonnets and bandanas in schools, were not about dress codes or personal freedoms but constituted an assault on the secular and modern constitution.
She argued that these incidents were strategically orchestrated to legitimize the amendment and simultaneously undermine secularism. Eylem emphasized that teachers would not back down in their fight against such interventions.
Pointing to a protest scheduled for Friday at 1:30 p.m. in front of the Ministry of Education under the slogan "No to Impositions, Impoverishment, and Bigotry!", Eylem said that 30 organizations would participate in the demonstration, demanding the annulment of the unauthorized changes to the Disciplinary Regulation.
She also stated that legal action would be pursued regarding the amendment and that they would formally request the Council of Ministers to reverse the decision.
Finally, Eylem stressed that if the decision was not revoked following Friday's protest, demonstrations would continue, reaffirming that they would not step back.
